In our article series “Facts” we’ll be talking with members of the coffee shop ecosystem that inspire us, from bakeries to manufacturers, consumer products, and everyone else in between. We want to get to know these folks, and we want you to, too. We’ll be asking everyone the same three questions—the answers, though, will be wildly different.
Up now is Sattva Vida, founded by Karen Lauterstein. Fresh off a yoga program at an ashram, where meals were simply, vegetarian, and delicious, Lauterstein wanted to recreate the feeling she had eating such fresh, clean food while also indulging. The result? Sattva Vida’s Energy Bites, which… Well, we’ll just let Lauterstein describe them for you:
“These days, health-conscious consumers look for fresh, healthy alternatives to traditional muffins and pastries with their coffee, and our bites fit the bill. They are vegan, gluten-free, no added sugar, and extremely satisfying,” she says. “We believe simple is better, and that less is more when it comes to ingredients.”
We're best known for crafting premium quality, incredibly delicious Energy Bites using simple and limited ingredients. Our bites contain only 3-6 ingredients per flavor.
Oh, and let's not forget the most important thing! Our bites are known for going great with coffee. You can find them in dozens of coffee shops in jars at the counter. The most popular flavors are Cocoa Craze & Peanut Envy.
The first Energy Bite I ever made was our "Off the Walnut" flavor in January 2015. I had just returned home from a month at Sivananda Ashram, where I went to complete a yoga teacher training program and to reconnect with my soul. My 20 year corporate sales career was no longer satisfying or bringing me joy. I wanted to follow my passions & entrepreneurial drive. But, what would come next?
All the food at the Ashram was vegetarian, clean, and amazing. My classmate said, "If you like this kind of food, you should really try this energy ball recipe." She proceeded to give me a recipe that, unbeknownst to me at the time, would change the course of my life.
When I returned home, I was psyched to make it but I didn't even have a food processor and so I managed to whip it up in a Nutri-bullet. I couldn't believe the deliciousness from a few simple ingredients. The original recipe called for coconut oil, but it tasted better and was less oily without it—so I removed it. Less is more. I ran to Bed, Bath & Beyond and got a legit food processor. I then became obsessed—creating over 20 flavors during the R&D phase, and eventually narrowing it down to the 5 that are in the market today.
We're about to launch a rebrand which is very exciting. We partnered with an incredible creative agency, Wallace Church, to really hone in on our brand, and we love it! The updated design & logo is full of color & fits our vibe. It's the same great product that our customers know and love—just a fresh, updated design to bring us into the next phase of our growth.
